High strength-to-weight ratios, high flexibility and tensile strength, and high shock resistance. Species is currently challenged due to an ongoing infestation of the invasive Emerald Ash Borer.

Straight grain, sometimes wavy, uniform medium to fine texture. Heartwood is light yellow, sapwood whitish/pale yellow. Color darkens with age with exposure to light. High rot and insect resistance.
